Proverbs 28:26
He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.
If the Lord were to put His finger on the pulse of individuals and let them know of the number one ailment they have, the first truth in today’s verse may be the diagnosis. They are fools. Indicated by their principal symptom of trusting in their own heart, for God’s Word clearly states: He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool…. Ask any pastor. They can probably tell you story after story of individuals that said to them, “I know in my heart that this is what I should do.” They ask not counsel, or advice, or Biblical teaching on a matter, they simply trust their heart for direction. Most of the time, if not always, their course of action is foolish, and the results of their decision prove it.
Jeremiah spoke truth about the heart. He said, The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (Jeremiah 17:9) “The heart wants what the heart wants” this may be a true statement, but what does the heart want? Does it want that which God wants?
Proverbs 16:25 states, There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. That way: that way that seems right always begins in the heart. But there is an antidote. Wise counsel is the cure for a foolish heart. This is where many fail. They fail to seek wisdom, instruction, truth, and understanding from others who possess such. They simply, oftentimes, follow their heart.
Instead of following the desires of the heart, the Bible recommends: Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. (Proverbs 4:23)
Yes indeed. No further embellishment needed. Metaphorically though, what is needed is a heart transplant. The fleshly heart of this physical life exchanged for the loving, spiritual, perfect heart of God our Father.
